There is Nothing like a Homegrown Tomato…
One year, a perfect storm of over planting and ideal conditions produced a banner crop of tomatoes. Our founder shared them with her neighbors, left them on friend’s doorsteps, and gave them away wherever she went.
After giving a tomato to a homeless man, he burst into tears. The gesture brought back memories of growing up on his grandfather’s farm and a joy that most homeless people do not get — farm fresh produce. His reaction illustrated that food access is different from readily availabile nutrient-dense produce. She continued to bring him tomatoes and he began to call her the tomato fairy.
